What a crazy week!

This week in broadcasting has been pretty easy to me, but everything else in my world is CRAZY! I had a little mental breakdown yesterday, oops! I was sitting at musical rehearsal and just ran through all of the things I have to do in the next few days and it made my head start spinning! School work is getting in the way of all my extracurricular stuff and it's getting somewhat hard to balance. Kiss Me, Kate is opening in 2 weeks, so after that is over I will have all of my evenings back. I'm excited for the show, though! The County Line has a little Halloween theme going on this week. It's not like last year's Halloween Special (which nearly killed us all) but it's still going to be fun! I also made a promo for the Lambda Sigma Clothing Drive which is going on this week. It's the second promo that I can add to my senior project. One more to go!

The career search has been nonexistant this week because I've been focusing on everything else. We met with Meg Camaredese from CNN this week and she was really cool. I got her email information so hopefully I can contact her in the future. I also have Bowers and Batulis in the "real world" who might be able to hook me up w/ some job opps in the future. Networking is everything!

I found an article in the Turkish Press (it's good to look at non-US media sources sometimes to see how other cultures view the news) saying Europe's top-selling newspaper, Germany's tabloid daily Bild, endorsed George W. Bush for US president Wednesday, saying he would do a better job fighting terror and not ask Berlin to send troops to Iraq. I think it's interesting that a world power like Germany has people endorsing leaders in another country. Pretty interesting to see just how far the election coverage can reach!

A much-needed break

I'm home a Fall break right now and loving it. Even though I'm not supposed to have to do any work, I'm doing it anyway! I can't help but think about all the stuff I have going on that's brewing in the back of my mind!

This week in broadcasting has been pretty easy because it was only a 3-day week. Megan and I had a REALLY good morning show on Monday. Great info and great talk breaks between us. I had a good shift on Wednesday, too. I'm ready to get everything ready for The County Line this week. We lost some prep time, but we have a full week to prepare for the show so hopefully things will go well. I also went to AV services and got dubs of 3 shows so that I can go back and critique everyone's performance. I think that feedback is necessary, since when you're actually taping a show you don't get to really see anything, it's just chaos and screaming... at least on my party, anyway! Haha! I'm also going to start hunkering down on my senior project because I took on a lot of different tasks that I need to get done before Winter break.

In the career search I haven't done too much this week. I turned 22 yesterday (I'M SO OLD!) and I officially feel like an adult! I've actually been having dreams lately about what my future will be. The more and more I think about it, I just want to move as soon as I graduate. I want a job really bad, too. I definitely think it's going to be a gametime decision on what I do. May is still kinda far off... or at least I'll pretend.

I found this article saying Viacom's Nickelodeon Channel will pay $1 million and the Disney's ABC Family Channel will turn over $500,000 to resolve "potential violations" found during Federal Communications Commission audits conducted in the last quarter of 2003. Now, is it just me or is the FCC just blasting EVERYONE lately?! I know that there's a call to turn the "indecency" on TV right now around, but it seems like they're just looking for chances to hand out fines.

Homecoming's Here!

It's hard to believe that it's homecoming at Westminster already! I feel like it was just August a few days ago! This weekend is going to be a lot of fun. Theta Chi is doing Scooby Doo as their float and I get to be a zombie! Rock on! I've been pretty busy with dance team, dance theater, and Kiss Me, Kate. Broadcasting does keep me the busiest of all though!

This week in broadcasting I shot another package the The County Line. I revisted flood victims that I talked to one month ago just as the floodwaters reached their peak. Now that things are dried up and back to normal some people are having harder times than others. Patty Twigg of New Wilmington had VERY little damage to her rental home, even though the water came up to her front door. People just down the road, however, lost almost everything on the ground levels of their homes and even had to be rescued by boat! Check out The County Line this week, 7:30 on Thursday and Friday on WCN!

The hunt for a job is always in the back of my mind... Unlike many of my fellow capstoners, I don't really have time to find a job outside of my duties as News Director at Westminster. I've been making The County Line my priority since sophomore year, and it's not something that I am ready to scale back any time soon. I know that I need to start getting my resume and resume tapes ready to send out to potential employers, but right now I'm just enjoying doing a lot of extracurricular activities because once I enter the "real world" I won't have much time to do those kinds of things.

I found an article this week called "On the Hot Seat" about how network execs are finding the heat shifted to them once ratings start to decline. In the fall season to date, NBC has seen its ratings in the key 18-49 demographic fall 16 percent, while CBS has seen an 11 percent jump and ABC has seen a gain of 3 percent. NBC exec Jeff Zucker is now coming under fire after the network passed on the show "Desperate Housewives" which is now a huge success for ABC. Looks like the ratings are going to be shifting, and that might cost some people their jobs! Oh, the stability of broadcasting!

Pat in action!

Mr. Weaver sent me this picture me and videographer Melissa DePaul when we covered the local floods last month. Next week I will be visiting with the families in my package to see how they are doing a month later. I have 2 packages done that I am proud of and I have some good ideas for the future.

John Mayer is everywhere!

Random blog title, but I feel like John Mayer is everywhere, but no where at the same time! He's all over the radio and stuff, but I never see him on TV or anything like that. I guess he's just that good. Not. Anyway...

This week was as busy as the last. I've had musical rehearsal every night, and I've started rehearsals for Dance Team and Dance Theater. Craziness! I think we're going to have a very good County Line this week. Everyone's packages are very solid and hey, they're almost all done earlier than 7pm! Whoo hoo! Last week's show was a train wreck... I'm not really sure what happened. I think it was just the fact that everyone's game was kind of off, so that just added up to one bad show. But hey- our first two shows were fantastic, so I guess we were due for a blooper show! Next week I was supposed to do a story about hybrid cars, but I think I am going to revisit the flood victims that I focused on last month and see how they are doing now a month after the damage. Good people story!

Looking to the future I'm still always up in the air! I went to my cousin's wedding last weekend and EVERYONE in my family was like, "So what are you doing after you graduate?" and my answer was, "You know... I'm not sure yet... but definitely moving." I basically have two plans right now, and I think it's going to be a game time decision as to what I do. I'm either going to stay close and live at home, saving up money to make a big career move, or I'm going to just pack it all up and head to NYC to see where the wind takes me. I think that there's so many things that I could do, especially in broadcasting, that I'm going to have to not be afraid to take some big chances. We'll see how it goes!

In an article titled "Howard Stern's Sirius Move Sends Shock Waves Across Industry" Stern says that his jump to satellite radio, "...marks the death of AM and FM radio, I guarantee it!" That's some pretty "sirius" (awful pun) news for those of us in the radio industry. I know that I personally listen to my CDs and MP3s more than the radio. And if my computer didn't suck I would listen to internet radio a whole lot more. To quote Bob Dylan, "The times they are a-changin'."
