Honestly, I'm a little hesitant to type this... but I think Britney is back, y'all. One her sixth studio album (due out December 2, 2008) Britney Spears really sounds like herself again. I was a huge fan of her last disc, Blackout, and while the album was full of awesome tracks and great beats, it didn't particularly shine with that typical Britney magic. On Circus it feels like we have the old Britney back. The music sounds like what we're used to hearing from Spears, but is still modern and fresh. It actually sounds like there is a person with feelings and emotions behind the voice. It's as if she has woken up from whatever psychologically or medically-induced haze she has been in for the last year.
Okay, let's talk about the songs. The first single "Womanizer" was a little unusual at first, but I think it gets catchier and catchier with every play. Great workout song, too! The title track, "Circus", which is going to be the second single, is really great and is probably my favorite song on the album. I love the slow, kinda spooky/ominous intro. When the song slows and Britney sings, "I feel the adrenaline moving through my veins" I can feel her energy... Like she is about to show us exactly why she is a megastar.
Some of my favorite dancier jams are "Mannequin," "Kill the Lights," and "Shattered Glass." A few of the slower songs like "Unusual You" and "Blur" are actually kind of chilling. It's songs like those which make me see the "real" Britney underneath all the media mania. I believe what she's singing.
When it's all said and done I think Circus is a really great album. Her best ever? No, I don't think so. But it is a great mix of the fantastic production of Blackout with the relate-ability of Britney. Is the old Britney back? We'll have to find out. Spears is scheduled to appear on Good Morning America on December 2 (her bday) and her documentary Britney: For the Record airs on MTV this Sunday night, November 30. I have a feeling a lot of anxious people will be watching.
