Spelling Bee Bonanza!

We've been watching the Scripps National Spelling Bee all day at work and it's so much fun! Brought me back to 1997 when jittery Rebecca Sealfon excitedly won by spelling/screaming the word "euonym."

I like to think that I am a pretty good speller most of the time but—like many people—my speedy typing often leads to some interesting typos. Sometimes it's just careless mistakes and other times my brain goes into autopilot and makes me type commonly used words. For instance, I cannot type the word "part" without making it "party" (says a lot, no?)

With spelling geeks of the world are abuzz about tonight's finale of the Scripps National Spelling Bee the folks at Yahoo! thought it would be fun to take a look into some of the recent misspelled terms and names people are searching for on the Web. According to Yahoo! some of the most commonly misspelled Search terms in the past month are:

“Swan Flu” (for Swine Flu)
“Susan Boil” (for Susan Boyle)
“Brack Obama” (for Barack Obama)
“Paperview boxing” (for “pay per view boxing”)
“Wallmart” (for Wal-Mart)
“Farrah Faucet” (for Farrah Fawcett)
“Dancing with the Starts” (for Dancing with the Stars)
“Bea Author” (for Bea Arthur)
“Mysapce” (for Myspace)

I get why certain proper names are misspelled (or typo'd), but I do enjoy "paperview" and "swan flu." Why people search for the names of websites like MySpace I will never understand. Fun data, though!

The finals of the Bee run tonight at 8pm on ABC. If you're a spelling geek yourself you can follow the Scripps National Spelling Bee on Twitter or get more interesting search facts (they're pretty fun) from Yahoo! Search Data.
