'Going the Distance' Rides the Line Between Cutesy and Cool

Real-life pair (allegedly?) Drew Barrymore and Justin Long co-star in the new romantic comedy Going the Distance about a bi-coastal couple struggling to make their long-distance relationship work. The concept may not be new, but the movie has a fresh take on an old story.

Barrymore is her normal lovable and quirky self, playing a 31-year-old graduate student and wannabe journalist interning in NYC for the Summer. Long plays a puppy-dog-cute record label dude who gets dumped by his girlfriend and meets Drew in the same night.

I'll spare you the play-by-play of the film, but it breaks down like this: If you are a girl you will like Going the Distance because 1) all girls like Drew Barrymore and 2) Justin Long is the hopelessly romantic, but not overly mushy guy that every girl wants to date. Boys might like the film too because 1) all boys like Drew Barrymore and 2) supporting actors Jason Sudeikis and Charlie Day are every dude's fantasy bros.

The movie was really cute, the soundtrack was fun and Drew and Justin are a pretty great couple on screen. Yes, some of the scenarios are a little goofy (like Long's unnecessary spray tan scene), but overall Going the Distance rides that fine line between cutesy and cool.
