I just met 1/5 of the Spice Girls down in the lobby of Rockefeller Center. It was a complete case of "right place/right time" and I knew that if I didn't say hello to her I would be mad at myself for the rest of my life. I may have looked like a 25-year-old man, but on the inside I was a 12-year-old girl.
I was waiting for my friend to meet me at the visitors center when Mel came in with her husband. She was wearing a tight grey leopard dress and knee-high boots. She didn't have much makeup on but looked beautiful. She was limping a little bit... not sure why. EVERYONE in the lobby was looking at her. She was clearly a celebrity, but didn't seem to care. They were waiting to get guest passes and I thought, "it's now or never, Pat. Say hello to her or you will regret this for the rest of your life." So, with everyone watching me, I walked up to her and we had the following exchange. I wish I could capture the true awkwardness in writing.
Pat, to the back of Mel's giant hair, a little too loudly: "Mel."
Mel, turning around: "Yes?"
Pat, trembling: "Hi. I just wanted to say hello. I'm a great big fan. (awkwardly extends hand.)
Mel: "Thank you (shakes hand.)"
Pat: "Ok well... hope you're well."
Mel: "Thanks"
Pat, a little too loudly again: "Thanks (quick exit.)"
I'M A GREAT BIG FAN?! WHO SAYS THAT?! Creepsters, that's who. I'm so awkward. I don't really get star struck, but I was seriously quaking. Couldn't get a photo or anything. I was grossly unprepared.
Just sharing another moment in my weird, random life.
